Past Film Projects

Reading is Fundamental (January 2003) 9 min.
This is a documentary I did for a documentary production class I took. It Reading
is Fundamental focuses on the Utah State Library for the Blind and Phyically Disabled. It talks about the services that they offer there, the people who use the library, and more importantly it talks about the value of being able to read. Reading is a basic part of life in our world. This film makes people think about the issue of literacy as a parrallel to having sight or being blind.

Main interviews: Gerald Buttars (library director), Dennis Hall (radio station manager), Mary Anne Fisher (library patron & volunteer), Michael Smith (radio volunteer), and James Shulfer (volunteer coordinator).

Roomate Wanted (May 2002) 3 min.
This was a fun film. It was for an assignment that would not allow us to edit the film. It was to be all in the camera shots that we planned out and starting and stopping the camera.

Thanks to my wife Becky and those who willingly acted in my short, cheesey, romantic comedy: Ale Melendez, Jenn Stubbs, and Jason Ball.

The Lost Boys of Sudan (April 2002) 7 min.
This is one of my films that I am most proud. It is a short documentary interviewing three Afican refugees living in Salt Lake City. It is meant as an introduction to the story of the "Lost Boys", a group of refugees who were all orphaned and fled Sudan. Their story is much too big, and tragic to fully discuss in a short student film. But this film does serve as a springboard for investigation and awareness. I was introduced to them through a friend Tiffany Ivins and was so impressed with them and their friendliness that I decided to do a film about them.

Many people helped to make this film, although I did all the actual filmmaking.

The Gate (March 2002) 6 min.
This was a hard project, but by far the most rewarding for me as a filmmaker. It still isn't quite finished, although its been shown in my class and at the Utah Film and Video Center. I still want to work on the sound track. Eventually I plan to submit this film to a film festival or two.
I had some wonderful help from my friends and family, but most of all from my wife Becky. I also could not have made this film without my friend Mike Smith who stars in the film.

I am very thankful to Lee Christensen and the Ensign magazine for giving me permission to make this adaptation of Lee's short story.

Time is a Strange Thing (December 2001) 30 min.

I made a short video project for one of my film classes along with my friend Jason Ball. The basic story is about two college students who are fed up with the dating scene, so they decide to build a time machine to date girls from the past. They meet another time traveller who is stranded in ancient China, but are unable to rescue her. They then decide to trace her leaps through time trying to prevent her from getting stuck. Through their travels they meet other time travellers who give them some interesting outlooks on life and time. They finally save the girl and the world.

It ended up being a real pain to edit, because the computer kept crashing on us and we had to start all over several times. But now that it's done, I think it turned out well.

Boy, was this one a learning experience!

T.V. is the Thing (May 2001) 13 min.

This was for a class I took at the Salt Lake Community College in video editing. I decided to do a little documentary about the influence television has on our lives. I filmed it with my Canon GL1 and edited it using Adobe Premier.

It was a fun project to work on and I got an A on it. The 4 people I interviewed are all friends of mine (with very different tastes in t.v. shows): Brian Kholes, Abe Allen, Jason Ball, and Mike Smith.

Tiger and Dragon(March 2001) 14 min.

A film by my friend, Jason Ball, Tiger and Dragon is a film about two men who fight to gain the empire.  Influenced very much by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Jason wanted to make a mythical and magical story.  The story is about a quest to find a legendary sword, "the one who finds it will be the new emperor!"

We shot the film in two days, and Jason edited it over the weekend on his iMac using iMovie2.  It turned out really good.

On Friday March 2, Tiger and Dragon screened at a film and video festival at the Utah Film and Video Center to an audience and was very well received.
